Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME)

The Summer Academy is organised by the Hungarian Student Association of Energy (SAE) at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, which is one of the oldest technical universities in Europe. The venue of the academy (air-conditioned lecture rooms, computer labs) is provided by two departments of the BME:

The participants of the Summer Academy will be accommodated in the Kármán Campus Hostel, just a few steps away from the venue of the professional programmes, in the middle of the university district.

Practical issues


Hungary has a continental climate, with cold, cloudy, humid winters and warm to hot summers. Average annual temperature is 9.7 °C. Temperature extremes are about 42 °C in the summer and −29 °C in the winter. Average temperature in the summer is 27 to 35 °C, and in the winter it is 0 to −15 °C. The average yearly rainfall is approximately 600 millimetres. The weather in the period of the summer academy is usually nice and warm. Daily temperature ranges from 20°C to 25°C and the relative humidity is below 40%.

Bank, currency, credit

Although Hungary had joined EU and has been a member since 2004, the official currency is still the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Banking in Hungary is up to the standards of western countries. There are a number of foreign-owned banks with offices in Hungary. The most popular are Citibank, Unicredit Bank, Budapest Bank, MKB Bank, Deutsche Bank, CIB Bank, OTP Bank, Erste Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, etc. Banking hours are usually from 9am until 5pm from Monday to Thursday, on Fridays banks tend to close earlier, usually 3pm or 4pm. ATM machines and currency exchange offices are available throughout the country. Debit and credit cards (AMEX, Diners Club, EnRoute, Euro/Mastercard, JCB, VISA) can be used in most shops.

The Summer Academy is organized in Budapest, which is the largest city of Hungary, and one of the largest cities in the European Union. It serves as the political, cultural, commercial, industrial and transportation centre of the country in a same time.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Its World Heritage Sites include the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, and the Millennium Underground Railway, the first undergorund railway on the European continent.

Public Transportation system

The public transportation system in Budapest is a favorite internal travel option for a number of Budapest visitors. The system is efficient, inexpensive and runs throughout all of the major tourist areas of Budapest. The system consists of a combination of the bus, trolley-bus, tram, metro, and train lines and is streamlined so that tickets for all of them can generally be purchased at the same locations.
